Woodwinds and Piano
Saxophonist Jason Mattina began his journey as a musician in the foothills of the NY Adirondack Mountains studying privately with Jerry Santy and Elizabeth Bennett. Since then he has been studying the saxophone professionally in Buffalo NY for just over a decade. He began his career at the University of Buffalo where he was fortunate to have many great opportunities such as playing solo repetoire with the UB Symphony Orchestra and Wind Band as well as sitting principal Alto in the Jazz Ensemble studying under Dave Schiavone, Harry Fackalman and Jon Nelson. It was these experiences that seated his musical cornerstone.
Growing up in the hills, his first passion was teaching skiing however it was on the slopes where he realized his dream of preforming and teaching music at the professional level. After a minor skiing accident followed by a brief surgery Jason is currently continuing his studies at Buffalo State College under the direction of Harry Fackalman as well as Dr Ricky Fleming with the Buffalo State Wind and Jazz ensembles as well as the Saxophone Quartet. In his free time he continues his studies under Dave Schiavone which have shifted focus towards professionalism, musicality and expression. Focusing his time towards the Tenor voice he secured the principal tenor saxophone chair in the jazz ensemble and has been studying jazz and the art of ad lib while seeking a Bachelors Degree in Music.
Skiing never left his heart and after much rehabilitation he still continues to slide down the slopes annually; however his professional attention remains pointed towards music performance and education.
An avid outdoorsman and professional scouter Jason studied team building while directing a ropes course for the Boy Scouts of America in New Hampshire at The T.L. Storer Scout Reservation. His pursuit of the mountains remaining strong he learned to climb rock faces as well as ice in the midst of teaching scouts and scouters where their limits are and how a group of people can become invincible team. This experience spread all throughout his life and he continues to express his team building knowledge to every pursuit he grasps, in turn, seeking to leave every scenario with a better stance then where it began.
